Mayo sheds light on skin cancer awareness

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - Today marks the start of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato is highlighting the risks and signs of the illness.
The Skin Cancer Foundation says more than 5 million cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, making it the most common form of cancer in the U.S.
Though many associate sunshine with summer months, sun exposure happens year-round. Factors such as fair skin, a history of severe sunburn, and having more than 50 moles on your body can make you more susceptible to the cancer.
LifeJacket Skin Protection, manufactured in Poole, is a lightweight, water-resistant skin protection product. It is the creation of three friends in their 30s – Billly Boulos, Rob Sumner and Jono Sumner. Jono Sumner said: “Like everyone else, I thought I was invincible until I was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 34. It was a real wake-up call.” He decided to help other men protect themselves from skin cancer, the most easily preventable cancer. Men in the UK are twice as likely to develop skin cancer as women. Male skin cancer cases have exploded over the past 20 years and are forecast to double over the next 20 – largely because men are not protecting their skin when outdoors or not applying protection all year.

Usually seen in a scarf, jacket and trousers, the Thomas Edison statue in Port Huron will be switching his outfit Saturday for something a little more colorful.
On Saturday, lifestyle company Sun Bum will cover 50 statues across the country in banana suits, one in each state, for a campaign to encourage sunscreen use and education. And Edison is Michigan’s chosen statue.
“Bananas can protect themselves with that nice peel, we can’t,” said Andrew Kercher, Port Huron Museums community engagement director.
Representatives will set up in the area from 7 to 8 a.m. and will be on location with the banana suit until 5 p.m., he said.
