Laurentian University's president is meeting virtually with students tonight, the first time he's addressed them since the school affected drastic changes to navigate a financial crisis.

In the labyrinth of funding grants, it was the province that ultimately decided and then recommended projects to support under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).
For Greater Sudbury, that means improvements to outdoor recreation courts, but it also means that Laurentian University’s application to ICIP for $20 million in deferred maintenance funding for the Ben F. Avery Athletic Complex was denied.

“It’s important to understand the flow of how the money was invested and the role of the province and the role of the feds,” said Paul Lefebvre, Sudbury MP, during an interview. “And, it’s important to mention the role of the municipality.”

Earlier this year, Laurentian University, Northern Ontario’s largest university, faced a devastating financial reckoning it could no longer delay. The choice was stark: close the university’s doors, or set down the path of the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) to save the university, understanding that it would be difficult and that many in our community would be impacted. Laurentian turned to the CCAA process, a procedure that allowed us the opportunity to restructure our academic and operational affairs in order to secure a viable and sustainable long-term future.
