One of the oldest Indigenous studies programs in Canada will likely end as Laurentian University looks to terminate ties with the University of Sudbury, a move experts say could put the financially plagued school off the radar of an important population of students.

The fallout from Laurentian University’s financial crisis continues to be felt throughout Greater Sudbury and on campus.
On Thursday, university president Robert Hache announced the school plans to euthanize hundreds of animals used for research. Understandably, that news has caused shock and dismay for the many animal-loving residents of the city.

Shaun Malley, a spokesperson for Laurentian University, acknowledged Thursday that with the closure of some LU facilities, programs and research labs, there are about 200 small animals mostly mice and rats that are scheduled to be euthanized.

A court-ordered April 30 deadline for Laurentian Univesity to have a restructuring plan in place to resolve its insolvency situation has been moved back.
Superior Court Justice Geoffrey Morawetz announced Thursday following a full-day virtual hearing on two motions that he will have his rulings ready by 11 p.m. since they pertained to the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act.
