An armed Army trainee from Fort Jackson, S.C., hijacked a bus full of elementary school students on Thursday before letting the children off, abandoning the bus and his rifle and being arrested, according to local authorities.
The incident began around 7 a.m. at Fort Jackson, outside of Columbia, where the trainee, dressed in physical training clothing and armed with a rifle, “ran off post,” according to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott.
The man tried to flag down vehicles on Interstate 77 before stopping at a bus stop and entering the vehicle along with children headed to Forest Lake Elementary School.

COLUMBIA, S.C. The Richland County coroner says a infant has died at a Columbia apartment complex.
Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford says the 3-week-old girl was found unresponsive at The Colony apartments on Thursday, March 4, 2021 around 5:30 a.m.
Rutherford does not say at this time how they believe the child died.
“We are currently investigating this matter in collaboration with the City Of Columbia Police Department and SLED.”, Coroner Rutherford states.

The Columbia Police Department and a spokesperson for Embassy Suites did not immediately respond to PEOPLE s request for comment.

Sheriff Leon Lott spoke at a press conference Tuesday morning, where he called the suspects wolves who had been preying on sheep, or the Hispanic community. According to Lott, the two suspects are Charles A. Clippard and Michael J. Knox.
