Appalachian Regional Commission’s (ARC) INvestments Supporting Partnerships in Recovery Ecosystems awarded $1.1 million in grants for three projects in the Appalachian region of Virginia that will focus on substance abuse disorders and providing a path that allows individuals to re-enter the workforce.
Governor Ralph Northam, who serves as ARC’s States’ 2021 co-chair, said that as both a doctor and governor he sees how substance abuse affects the entire commonwealth.
“We need a focused, regional approach to reducing addiction and supporting recovery. The INSPIRE Initiative will help build a more resilient and thriving Appalachia, and I am proud of the strong collaborative efforts of our regional partners throughout Appalachian Virginia to bring this federally supported program to their communities.”

TYSONS CORNER, VA The monumental power failure in Texas caused by unseasonable cold showed how extreme weather can push an electric grid to the brink.
The average U.S. power customer loses electricity for 1.5 to 2 hours annually even before extreme weather events are taken into account, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. As the Texas experience showed, hurricanes, snowstorms, heat waves and other extreme weather events can make such outages dramatically worse.
Customers in Virginia state experienced 5.17 hours without power in 2019 0.47 more hours than the national average of 4.7 hours in 2019, which is the most recent information available, according to the EIA.
