Silver City, NM, May 04, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Despite the global pandemic that halted businesses across the nation, Silver City, New Mexico has managed to open more businesses than closed during the pandemic. While some local businesses closed their doors, a variety opened in the midst of the pandemic outweighing those that were lost. During the most recent session of the New Mexico State Legislature, the Town of Silver City was designated to receive nearly $2 million for various capital improvement projects. According to a release from the Town, the largest budget item is to go toward “improvements to Little Walnut Road, including right-of-way acquisitions of land to support the redesign, rebuilding the expansion of the town roadway north of Chavez Lane to include the addition of bicycle lanes, improved curb and gutter for improved drainage, in addition to ADA-compliant sidewalks, drive pads, signage and striping. It is reported that an additional $500,000 will support ongoing renovation of the historic Waterworks building on Little Walnut that include plans for a layover station for Continental Divide Trail users, camp sites for hikers and bikers, and future restrooms and kitchen facilities that can be available for use by area residents.

The Town of Silver City has scheduled a water outage for tomorrow, Wednesday, April 21
st, to connect a new 12-inch water main. The water will be off on Ridge Road from Partridge Drive to the Grant County Detention Center and surrounding area from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. In particular, areas to be affected by the outage in Silver Acres include: Country Club Drive, Lance Drive, Vicente Place, Spear Drive, Bonita Avenue, Spur Drive, Little Spur Drive, Tabor Avenue, Trailing Heart, Broken Arrow Drive, Apache Street, Comanche Street, and Broken Bow Drive. Residents wishing to ask questions are urged to contact the Utilities Department at (575) 534-6365.

The New Mexico Farmers Association, in collaboration with the New Mexico Acequia (Ahh-say-kee-ah) Association has introduced the 2021 Infrastructure Grant Program. The “COVID-19 Local Food Supply Chain Response Fund” grant provides New Mexico farmers and ranchers with financial support regarding infrastructure needs that include:
Growing and improving economic viability
Increasing soil and ecosystem health
Increasing access to healthy and culturally important foods for communities
Supporting the next generation of young farmers and ranchers
Farmers, ranchers, and producer collectives who are residents or whose farms are located in New Mexico, are invited to apply by visiting newmexicofma.org. Applications are due by Wednesday, March 17th.

Silver City Police Chief, Freddie Portillo, has completed a review of 2020 crime statistics that revealed most incidents of criminal activity remained steady or declined, while aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, vehicle thefts, and residential burglaries were on the rise. Larcenies, including damage to motor vehicles, shoplifting, and other property damage decreased overall. In addition, motor vehicle crashes decreased 32% from 2019 which could be attributed to proactive enforcement of safety laws and less traffic due to COVID-19.
The New Mexico Department of Health has announced that the state has administered over 500,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. According to a release from the NMDOH, as of February 22nd, the state has partially vaccinated more than 16.5% of New Mexicans, and fully vaccinated more than 8%. New Mexico is currently vaccinating the 1A group in addition to residents 75 years and older
