State revokes permit for proposed Springfield biomass plant Published: 4/4/2021 8:40:31 PM SPRINGFIELD A proposed biomass power plant, long the subject of controversy and opposition, had its air quality permit revoked by the state Department of Environmental Protection on Friday. The proposed wood-burning plant is being developed by Palmer Renewable Energy. However, in a letter to the company, MassDEP western regional office director Michael Gorski said the DEP was revoking the proposed East Springfield plant’s permit because construction had not commenced within a two-year time frame. Special City Council Committee Created On COVID-19 Response

3:27          The newly-installed president of the City Council in Springfield, Massachusetts has announced a special committee to address COVID-19 issues.         Springfield City Council President Marcus Williams said the new ad hoc COVID-19 Response Committee will look into issues exacerbated by the pandemic including housing instability and food insecurity.       It will also provide a public forum for residents to provide input and feedback, explained Williams.        Williams appointed City Councilor Jesse Lederman to chair the special committee.        I am very greatful to our new president Marcus Williams for the opportunity to lead the newly-created COVID-19 Response Committee of the City Council, said Lederman.  What we are looking to do is insure the City Council is actively involved in the continuing effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and alsol in the proactive effort around what a recovery strategy would look like.

Springfield City Councilors Updated On Gas Leak Repairs

Listen to the interview with Jesse Lederman.      Environmentalists and elected officials in the largest city in western Massachusetts are monitoring the progress to repair hundreds of small natural gas leaks.     In what was considered a breakthrough agreement in 2017, Columbia Gas committed to an accelerated leak repair program and infrastructure upgrades in Springfield.     Eversource has now taken over operations for Columbia Gas.  Officials from the utility company recently briefed the Springfield City Council Committee on Sustainability and Environment on gas leak repairs.    WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with City Councilor Jesse Lederman, who chairs the committee.
