Council Holds Hearing on Implementation of Police Reform Task Force Recommendations – Mission Hill Gazette

The City Council Committee on Public Safety and Criminal Justice, chaired by Councilor Andrea Campbell, held a hearing on March 2 regarding the implementation of recommendations of the Boston Police Reform Task Force. Several councilors expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that no representatives from the Boston Police Department (BPD) or the administration were present at the hearing to provide information or answer questions. Campbell said that “late in the day” on March 1, the administration told the City Council that no one from the administration would attend the hearing, and provided a letter that included “general updates” regarding the implementation of the police reform bill.

Over the rest of that weekend, though, Brown and his staff were caught off guard by growing civil disturbances downtown and in the city’s neighborhoods, according to a 124-page report released Thursday by the city’s inspector general, Joe Ferguson.

Mayor Joseph Petty, City Manager Edward Augustus and Police Chief Steve Sargent participated in the demonstration. They marched to the District Courthouse downtown. They took a knee as a sign of solidarity. As the calendar now flips to 2021, those actions outside City Hall last June remain highlights of what the city has done in the wake of calls for police reform across the country.
