Bogata officials discover $100K owed in taxes, fees

BOGATA — Dating back to 2018, the city administration of Bogata learned it owed the Internal Revenue Service over $100,000 in back taxes, fines and fees. “The good news is that we’ve already been in contact with the IRS,” Mayor Larry Hinsley told the council and assembled audience members at Monday night’s meeting. “They are directing us as to what we need to do.” The obligation owed by the city is $72,819, and $32,972 is interest and penalties on the obligation. Hinsley told the council he was confident he could get most, if not all, of the interest and penalties waived. The bigger question is, he said, how did this happen in the first place? Hinsley spoke to City Judge Alex Davidson on the matter.

Bogata hires judge, revises elections schedule

BOGATA — City Council hired a municipal judge at Monday night’s meeting and gave the position a considerable raise. “We need to have a city judge in place,” Mayor Pro Tem Larry Hinsley told the council. “One of the things that I think is very important here is that we need to kickstart our judicial processes for lots of reasons, but for some of the things that we want to do as far as law enforcement, as far as code enforcement, you know, those kinds of things. We need to have we need to have a judge in place.” Alex Davidson, a special investigator for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and a native of Bogata, presented himself to the council. Davidson grew up in the city and attended school at Rivercrest before moving on to get his degrees in science, social work and criminology. His master’s degree is in criminology.
