This weekend in addition to collecting food for our food pantry at our food drives we will be collecting items for EVERY GOOD GIFT, a non-profit located in Glenside PA, that needs craft items and sewing items for the new satellite location that they hope to open later in 2021 in the Kensington area of Philadelphia.
Since the items that we are seeking to collect are more specialized for this collection, we have set up a Sign-Up Genius Page where you can review what is needed, sign up to provide it, and bring it to our collection drives this weekend. Needed items on the list include sewing supplies, craft materials, diapers, and wipes. The Sign-Up Genius Page link can be found at:
Labor Notes is excited to bring on two wonderful new staff organizers,
Sarah Hughes and
Luis Feliz Leon, at our New York office in February. Sarah and Luis are joining our training and events team, and they’ll also write for
Labor Notes. And
Zach Rioux, who has been temping with us for a year, is now permanent as a part-time administrative worker in our Detroit office.
Sarah is an experienced organizer and trainer with a passion for labor education. She has worked for the National Education Association (NEA), the Professional Staff Congress at the City University of New York, and university labor studies programs. She has also taught a variety of workshops to city workers, electricians, women workers, and others. She holds a masters in labor studies.

In 2020, there were about about 400,000 Covid-19 related deaths in the US, more than in any other country. Yet something else kills even more Americans, every year: inadequate healthcare.
According to a study published today in The Lancet, a UK medical journal, there were 461,000 so-called “missing Americans” in 2018. That means that if the US had a life expectancy equal to the average of countries of comparable wealth (in the study, the group is identified as G7 countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK, and US), its population would be nearly half a million more.
It’s not a new phenomenon. The US has trailed the rest of the advanced world in lifeexpectancy since the 1980s, and it’s now 3.4 years shorter than the average of other G7 countries in 2018, the last year for which international data is available.
