Opinion: Community colleges can speed the U.S. recovery

The coronavirus pandemic has left a vast number of Americans facing the prospect of long-term unemployment. Those who lack post-secondary credentials may take years to find steady, good-paying work, if such opportunities materialize at all.
Community and technical colleges can play a key role in helping these workers gain the education and skills necessary to advance their careers. Yet far from spurring an increase in community college enrollment, the current crisis is doing the opposite, which threatens to slow the country s recovery. Policymakers, state and federal, should increase investments in the two-year college system, offer more generous support to students, and create incentives for closer partnerships between colleges and local employers.

174 Power Global and Con Edison today announced the signing of a seven-year dispatch rights agreement for the development of a 100-megawatt battery storage project, the East River Energy Storage System, in Astoria, Queens.
174 Power Global will build and own the battery system, which is expected to be one of the biggest in New York State. The facility will be located on land owned by the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and leased under a long-term contract to 174 Power Global. The new energy storage system represents a redevelopment of the Charles Poletti Power Plant property, repowering New York City’s grid with a clean energy resource.

Art historian Katherine E. Manthorne has written a welcome addition to recent studies devoted to American women artists and cultural figures of the past two centuries. The flurry of such publications is especially noteworthy as we celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, earning women the right to vote after a long struggle.
“Responsible fiscal policy is borrowing like crazy right now,” Ms. MacGuineas said. There will come a time, she said, to re-evaluate the trade-offs. In the meantime, it’s time to spend, but be aware that a pivot will be necessary at some point:
“No matter which party is in power, it’s nice to be able to enact your agenda without having to pay for it. We saw that in the four years leading up to this downturn, and I’m concerned there will be lots of voices saying we shouldn’t pay for things down the road. But I think responsible fiscal policy is borrowing like crazy right now. Things that are targeted, things that are smart, to goose the economy. But once we stabilize the economy, be willing to bring that debt back down so it’s not growing faster than the economy.”
