The American Public Works Association has named the City of El Cajon’s North Marshall Dog Park as its Project of the Year. The dog park, located next to the El Cajon animal shelter, creates a new space for gatherings and activities. In partnership with The Toro Company and the Urban Corps of San Diego County, who received Toro’s Greenspace Enhancement Grant, construction of the park was finished this past summer. The park features an off-leash dog area with dog-bone shaped benches, a picnic area, and new landscaping. The park began as a vision to provide a multiple-use space for surrounding residents and businesses. What was once a dirt lot now fulfills that vision. The location was important as there were no parks or green spaces within walking distance of the nearby communities. Although a downtown high-rise building purchased by the City in 2016 as a new space for over 1,000 staffers was closed down last year over asbestos exposure, a greater threat to people in the building could have been uncontrollable fires.
A lawsuit filed this week by a senior City staff engineer claims he warned his superiors about non-functioning heating, air conditioning, and fire systems in the 101 Ash Street building beginning in late 2018, more than a year before the City began moving up to 1,100 staffers into the building in January 2020, but his warnings and those of several outside vendors were ignored by City departments, putting staff and the public at risk.

ROCKLAND Two weeks after many residents became aware of a partial land sale of the former MBNA property in Rockland, the City has begun its own clearing of the bushes that once separated the harbor from the parking lot and street above.
Tenants of the 12 Water Street property, under the ownership of Stuart Smith, of Camden, have been Archers on the Pier restaurant, the Pen Bay YMCA as a branch location, and a branch location of Yachting Solutions. Years ago, Smith also created an easement for the Boardwalk section of the Harbor Trail, which runs along the ocean side of the property.
