Is New York s Scooter Future Like Paris or Chicago? Survey Says … – Streetsblog New York City

Baguettes or deep dish pizza? When New York City welcomes e-scooters to the streets in 2021, will the new micromobility take people away from using public transportation or their own feet as it has in Paris or siphon them away from Ubers, Lyft’s or their own cars, as scooter-share did in Chicago and Los Angeles? In a world where public transportation has been devastated by the coronavirus, any mode share that siphons too many riders from buses and trains in New York could be part of an ongoing funding disaster for the MTA. However, industry representatives and outside transportation thinkers agree that the city’s scooter future looks more American than European.

What s the Difference Between Smart City and Surveillance?

What’s the Difference Between ‘Smart City’ and Surveillance? Speakers at the recent Micromobility World conference debated the future of smart city tech and whether it’s actually been improving urban mobility, or simply facilitating a growth of the surveillance state. Skip Descant, Government Technology   |   February 8, 2021   |  Analysis Nearly a decade into the “smart city” movement, observers from planning, transportation and privacy arenas are turning a critical eye to technology in search of a problem to solve. Buttigieg DOT confirmation boosts hope for massive infrastructure investment

Dive Brief: Industry and elected leaders praised Pete Buttigieg s confirmation as Transportation Secretary after his nomination passed the U.S. Senate 86-13 on Tuesday. Buttigieg s confirmation could be a boon for investment in the nation’s infrastructure, which has been called for on a bipartisan basis for many years, according to experts. Several officials emphasized how Buttigieg s experience as mayor of South Bend, IN, will stand him in good stead at the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), especially as he knows the challenges local leaders face. City leaders know these critical issues best,  Los Angeles City Council President Pro Tempore Joe Buscaino said. They know what s happening on the ground, and the work of Secretary Buttigieg reflects better the priorities of city leaders across this country.

Street Safety Groups to President Biden: Commit to a Federal Vision Zero Plan

President Biden must commit to a strategy to reduce road deaths in the United States to zero by 2050, a coalition of street safety groups told the new president even before his first full day in office. On Wednesday, as the Biden Administration was still setting up its voicemail systems and disinfecting the press briefing room, more than 74 organizations sent a group letter to the White House reminding the new president of that which he knows so painfully well: that almost 40,000 Americans die every year on our roadways and that government must do more to get that number moving to zero much faster.
