Warshaw’s daughter had become infected with the disease and her aunt had died from it, the Dec. 11 USA Today article said. The former mayor is quoted in the article saying, “We just felt like we had to do something so everybody was aware of how important it was for everybody to be responsible for each other’s health and well-being.”
While the specific content of the threats was not revealed, Warshaw said that some threatening emails had been turned over to the police, the Dodge City Globe reported.
“We are looking into the substance of the communication to determine an appropriate course of action,” Dodge City Police Chief Drew Francis said according to the report.

A western Kansas mayor announced her resignation Tuesday after receiving threats for publicly supporting a mask mandate in her city during the coronavirus pandemic.
Dodge City Mayor Joyce Warshaw said she had concerns about her safety after encountering threatening phone calls and emails following an interview she did with
USA Today Friday endorsing a mask mandate, the
Dodge City Globereported.
“Life has dealt out many challenges in our world that have perhaps caused many people to act inappropriately but I do not feel safe in this position anymore and am hopeful in removing myself this anger, accusations and abuse will not fall on anyone else and will calm down,” Warshaw wrote in her resignation letter.

DODGE CITY, Kan. Dodge City Mayor Joyce Warshaw is resigning after receiving threats over supporting a mask mandate.
Warshaw announced Tuesday that her resignation is effective immediately. The Dodge City Globe reports that Warshaw has been threatened since being quoted in a USA Today story published Friday. In the article, she said she supported a mask mandate. Warshaw said Tuesday she loves Dodge City, but she is concerned that people are not acting “normally“ because of pressures caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Some of the emails threatening Warshaw have been turned over to police.
Dodge City Police Chief Drew Francis said the department is determining a proper response to the emails.
