MOULTRIE, Ga. â The Moultrie-Colquitt County Development Authority has long made financial incentives available for industries seeking to move to Colquitt County. On Wednesday, the authorityâs board of directors re-affirmed that the same doesnât go for retail stores.
Authority Chairman Jim Matney told members during Wednesdayâs board meeting that a retail company had asked the authority for $300,000 to offset costs of opening a store in Moultrie.Â
He and others were careful not to identify the prospect, but they did say it would employ 12-15 people, a combination of full- and part-time employees with wages about $2-3 over minimum wage (which is currently $7.25 per hour). The company expects to invest $5 million in the proposed store, and it expects something between $3-1/2 million and $5 million in sales each year.

MOULTRIE, Ga. â The City of Moultrie has reevaluated its property tax rebate plan, and recipients will be pleased.
City council approved the plan Jan. 5 to give a 50% rebate on the 2020 city property tax paid by homeowners over age 65. The one-time rebate is paid for from a federal reimbursement for money the city spent fighting coronavirus, primarily for overtime paid to emergency workers.
On Tuesday, March 2, City Manager Pete Dillard told city council that 632 Moultrie homeowners had met the criteria for the rebate, but he urged the council to take it even further by rebating the entire tax payment for most of the people.

MOULTRIE, Ga. â The alcohol license of a Moultrie restaurant was pulled the morning after a deadly shooting last week. On Tuesday evening, residents spoke with Moultrie City Council both about prior problems at the location and about what some saw as a lack of due process in the revocation.
According to law enforcement reports, Elleven17, a restaurant at 1520 S. Main St., had been rented out Saturday evening, Jan. 9, for what was described as a birthday party, but it was in essence a rap concert with a cover charge. Early in the morning of Jan. 10, a fight broke out inside the restaurant.
