Paton House, Carlisle. Picture: Google Streetview The demolition of a major Carlisle city centre building is set to get the go-ahead this week. Paton House on Victoria Viaduct in Carlisle is recommended for demolition, and Carlisle City Council s development control committee will tomorrow decide whether to give the green light to the project. Built in 1937, the art-deco style building is now gradually falling into a state of disrepair , according to city council planning officers, who have recommended its demolition. The building would require substantial financial input to be re-purposed and/or upgraded so the decision has been taken to demolish it due its ever increasing negative impact on the surrounding area, planning officers have outlined in advance of Friday s meeting, adding that the building is no longer required by the City Council .

Darlington town centre Picture: SARAH CALDECOTT BLUEPRINTS of plans to illuminate one of the North-East’s most recognisable buildings have been revealed as part of a scheme to encourage more people to visit a town centre after dark. Darlington Borough Council has lodged planning applications with its planning department for a major lighting overhaul on key features in the High Row and West Row areas. The initiative includes installing low energy LED lighting on the grade II listed Clock Tower, a gift to the town in 1863 from Victorian railway pioneer Joseph Pease. Work would see the existing external cascade lights removed and lighting installed to the arched windows, internal clock tower face, high-level paired windows, and balconies.
