Almost 200 people came together Saturday at a Zoom rally hosted by the University Council-American Federation of Teachers, or UC-AFT, to demand a fair contract for UC lecturers and demonstrate their willingness to strike. Taking place on International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, the hourlong event featured speakers from several branches of UC-AFT and included messages of solidarity from other unions. Attendees were encouraged to sign and share a strike readiness pledge, which gained 40 signatures during the event.

AFSCME 3299 condemns alleged use of police during UC labor dispute

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, or AFSCME Local 3299, launched a campaign condemning UC administration for alleged use of police force on a UC worker due to a language barrier. The worker one out of more than 27,000 people represented by the union allegedly lived with roommates who had tested positive for COVID-19, according to UCPD Lieutenant Sabrina Reich. An AFSCME Local 3299 campaign letter alleges that UC management gave the worker instructions to leave and quarantine, but put “minimal effort” into communicating the message. As a result, the campaign letter added that the worker did not understand the COVID-19 protocol and arrived to work during his next scheduled shift at Dwinelle Hall on Jan. 18.

Staff report WARREN BDM Warren Steel Holdings LLC, which owns the former Republic Steel and RG Steel property, and the Western Reserve Port Authority have an agreement to donate the large swath of land to the port authority. “We are going through our due diligence as we speak,” said port authority CEO John Moliterno, who the port authority board in January authorized to negotiate terms of the gift. The property with a rich steelmaking past is nearly 1,000 acres that stretches almost 2 miles along Pine Avenue SE and includes portions of Warren, Niles, Howland and Warren Township. The port authority became involved at the urging of JobsOhio, the state’s private nonproft economic development agency.
