CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Charlottesville is offering funds for a limited time to help folks and businesses who are having trouble paying water and gas bills.
The city announced Monday, December 21, that it received CARES Act funds to assist utility customers whose accounts are past due as a result of financial hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Those who meet the requirements have been identified, and Charlottesville says it will be contacting them by mail or phone.

Prince William Service Authority offers bill relief program during pandemic
Prince William County Service Authority customers who have unpaid water bills from March 1, 2020, through December 30, 2020, and who have experienced a loss of income due to the impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic may be eligible to receive financial assistance funded by the COVID-19 Municipal Utility Relief Program.
Customers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, but no later than January 21, 2021, at 5 p.m.
The Service Authority will review all customer applications received by the deadline to verify each applicant’s eligibility and the amount of financial assistance each will receive, which will depend on the number of applications submitted and available funds.
FRONT ROYAL â Council members have voted 4-0 in favor of a motion to approve a change in the fiscal 2021 budget to reflect that the town received $88,109 from Warren County for funds awarded by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development COVID-10 Municipal Utility Relief Program. The town plans to distribute the money to eligible delinquent utility accounts.
The motion also calls for the Town Council to authorize the town manager to execute an agreement with Warren County for the use of the funds.
Finance Director B.J. Wilson said the town has approximately $545,000 in unpaid utility accounts. Accounts that are at least 30 days delinquent are eligible for the new funding, though priority is given to those that are 60 days past due, Wilson explained. Not all eligible accounts have received previous relief funds, he added.
Assistance Option 1: Request payment assistance through the COVID-19 Municipal Utility Relief Program
To provide financial relief for customers in need, Fairfax Water is working with Fairfax County, the City of Falls Church, and the City of Fairfax to administer funds received from the Commonwealth of Virginia s COVID-19 Municipal Utility Relief Program. Assistance Option 2: Set up an extended payment plan through the COVID-19 Relief Repayment Plan (referred to below as Repayment Plan )
Customers can set up a Repayment Plan with Fairfax Water to bring your overdue balance up to date during the next six months or longer, if necessary. This Repayment Plan will cover the overdue bill for the customer s drinking water service, provided by Fairfax Water, and wastewater service, provided by the governments of Fairfax County, City of Fairfax, or City of Falls Church, depending on location. GATE CITY â The town of Gate City is working to support residents who are struggling due to the pandemic.
What: Town Manager Greg Jones announced Monday that the town had been awarded COVID-19 Municipal Utility Relief Program funding. The funds were provided by the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act via the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
Who: This funding will support municipal utility relief efforts during the pandemic, according to a press release. It will directly assist customers who have fallen behind on their water and sewer bills as a result of economic hardship due to COVID-19.
