Geschke was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1939 and enjoyed a successful career in maths and technology long before co-founding Adobe. He taught mathematics at John Carroll University in the 1960s before completing a PhD in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in 1972.

LOS ALTOS, Calif. (AP) Charles “Chuck” Geschke the co-founder of the major software company Adobe Inc. who helped develop Portable Document Format technology, or PDFs died at age 81.
Geschke, who lived in the San Francisco Bay Area suburb of Los Altos, died Friday, the company said.
“This is a huge loss for the entire Adobe community and the technology industry, for whom he has been a guide and hero for decades,” Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen wrote in an email to the company’s employees.

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayan sent an announcement of Geschke’s passing to staff that included this tribute from his collaborator of five decades, John Warnock:
In 1982, Chuck and I agreed that we should leave Xerox and start our own company. That was the beginning of Adobe. I could never have imagined having a better, more likable, or more capable business partner. Not having Chuck in our lives will leave a huge hole and those who knew him will all agree.
