Part 5 – Palestinian Refugees and the Role of UNRWA Featuring:  Gwyn Lewis (UNRWA),  Diba Abu Nejila (humanitarian professional) In this session we focused on Palestinian refugees – one of the core issues of the conflict and which under the Olso Accords was to be resolved in the context of permanent status talks between Israelis and Palestinians. We will examine how Palestinians became refugees, the role and development of UNRWA as the organization responsible for Palestinian refugees, and the debate around the continued status of many Palestinians as refugees today.

Stuart Appelbaum is president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which represents more than 60,000 workers in retail, food and warehouse jobs nationwide. The union, known as RWDSU, is vying to represent the nearly 6,000 warehouse workers in Amazon’s Bessemer fulfillment center, and Appelbaum, who has led the union for more than two decades, has been a constant presence in the town and in the media during the months-long union vote.

In a rare public statement on a political appointment, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs called out misleading allegations of antisemitism leveled against Kristen Clarke, President Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. In a letter sent to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this week, the Jewish umbrella group urged the Senate to consider her nomination based on her record of fighting antisemitism and promoting civil rights.
