Munawar Faruqui bail plea rejected by HC
Comics Neeti Palta, Anuvab Pal and director Onir are the few names from the entertainment industry who have expressed disappointment over the Madhya Pradesh High Court s decision of turning down the bail plea of comedian Munawar Faruqui who is accused of passing indecent remarks about Hindu deities during a show in Indore.
Liberty of a person has to be balanced with his duties towards other citizens, Justice Rohit Arya of the Indore bench of the high court said, citing a Supreme Court ruling.
Onir called the development a vindictive prosecution against an artiste belonging to a minority community for something he did not say .
The curtains were closed, the stage was not even set. Yet an unsuspecting protagonist was plucked straight out of an Orwellian play and sent to jail for an act that did not unfold. Stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui has now been in jail for twenty -five days for ‘what he could have said.’
His bail plea was dismissed within minutes even though the local police admit there is no video evidence of Faruqui insulting any sentiments.
In the theatre of the absurd, perceived hurt and doctored hate have now taken centre stage. What there seems to be a record of though is that a mob attacked Faruqui and four others, and it roams free. When humour is silenced, the joke is on us.

In early November 2020, after the overnight listing of a defective petition, the Supreme Court of India granted bail to the television anchor, Arnab Goswami. In a section of the judgment, delivered later on November 27 and titled “Human Liberty and the role of courts”, the top court noted that “human liberty is a precious constitutional value”; that “the writ of liberty runs through the fabric of the Constitution”; that it was important for courts across the spectrum to ensure that “criminal law does not become a weapon for the selective harassment of citizens”; that the courts remained “the first line o
Munawar Faruqui, four other comedians were arrested on January 1
Indore:
The bail hearing of comedian Munawar Faruqui, who was arrested over alleged indecent remarks made against Hindu deities and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a show in Indore earlier this month, was adjourned by the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Thursday after the police failed to produce the case diary. The bail pleas of Mr Faruqui and four other stand-up comedians who have been arrested in this case, have already been rejected by lower courts.
Munawar Faruqui s lawyer Anshuman Shrivastav alleged that this was a tactic used by the police to harass Mr Faruqui. The bail plea will now be heard next week.
