Guest Opinion: With COVID vaccine, state and counties fail on the easy

By Curt McCay One thing this pandemic should have shown everyone is how the state and local governments fail on the easy. It should be easy to register people for the COVID shots; it should be easy to have to set up mass vaccination sites. I do not understand why there is an article titled The search for vaccine ‘takes time, luck (Feb. 21). Why is this? It seems we have incompetent state government that cannot distribute the available vaccine to counties in a manner that makes sense or provide a central vaccine registry because as the Acting Health Secretary, who is a lawyer, said it would present too many technical problems. So the state pawned registration off to the counties.

Ferguson pointed to CDC data that said Maryland has received about 565,000 vaccines from the federal government and that about 370,000 vaccines have yet to be used. Ferguson noted that after the department had pledged to put out 12,000 doses per day that there were two days last weekend when the department fell far short of that number. Ferguson blamed Acting Health Secretary Dennis Schrader for the arguably slow rollout and confusion over the state’s vaccination plan.

•Warns against non-essential travels •Lagos, Kaduna, FCT account for 70% of cases By Olawale Ajimotokan in Abuja The federal government yesterday rolled out measures to combat the resurgence of COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the curbs, the federal government issued an advisory to all the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to close all bars, night clubs, restaurants, event centres and recreational centres for the next five weeks. It also restricted public gatherings such as conferences, social events such as weddings and religious activities to not more than 50 people. It ordered federal civil servants from Grade Level 12 downwards to stay home for the next five weeks.
