SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) A former community college comptroller in Louisiana has been sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to repay nearly $270,000 after pleading guilty in what prosecutors say was years of fraud.
Carol Bates, former comptroller at Bossier Parish Community College was sentenced Monday by Chief U.S. District Judge S. Maurice Hicks Jr. in Shreveport, Acting United States Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook said in a news release.

SHREVEPORT, La. – Quion M. Smith, Sr., 38, of Bossier City, Louisiana, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Donald E. Walter to 96 months (8 years) in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Acting United States Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook announced.
On January 4, 2020, Louisiana State Police Troopers encountered a vehicle that was stopped at a traffic light near Interstate 220 in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. The State Troopers approached the vehicle and found that Smith was the only occupant of the vehicle and observed a firearm in plain view on the passenger seat. Troopers were able to remove the firearm for officer safety. A records check revealed that the firearm was reported stolen. Further investigation revealed that Smith was a six-time convicted felon and prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Acting United States Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook announced that Santiago Delfierro Anguiano, a/k/a “Shag,” age 50, a federal inmate, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Dee D. Drell for attempting to obtain contraband in prison. Judge Drell sentenced Anguiano to 120 months (10 years) in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release. This sentence will run consecutive to the 30-month federal sentence he is currently serving for Illegal Re-entry of a Removed Alien.
Anguiano pled guilty to the charge on January 16, 2020. Evidence introduced at the hearing revealed that in March 2016 while serving as a federal inmate at the U.S. Penitentiary in Pollock, Louisiana, Anguiano conspired with others to attempt to obtain methamphetamine in FCC Pollock. Anguiano knew that the methamphetamine was an illegal substance and that he was prohibited from having it. The methamphetamine was seized in a vehicle driven by a co-defendant in this case during a traffic stop in Wood
