Melbourne’s rapidly expanding outbreak has jumped to nine cases, after four new local cases tested positive this afternoon.
“This afternoon, the Department has been notified of four new cases,” the chief health officer Professor Brett Sutton said.
“They are all family contacts of the fifth case announced this morning, bringing the total of cases in this outbreak to nine.”
The blowout in cases across northern Melbourne comes as Melburnians will be required to wear masks indoors and limit their house guests to just five per day from 6pm on Tuesday night, as the discovery of a fifth locally acquired COVID-19 case in the city’s north prompted tighter restrictions.

Sydney, Australia, May 25 (EFE).- The Australian authorities on Tuesday announced a cap on the number of people allowed to attend public and private meetings and made the use of masks mandatory in the southern Victoria state after a small Covid-19 outbreak.
The measures, which limit home visitors to five people and caps public gatherings at 30, came into effect on Tuesday and will continue until June 4 at least, Acting Premier James Merlino said.
So far, a total of nine cases have been detected during the latest outbreak, five of which were detected on Tuesday.
