NSW and the Morrison government have dismissed Victoriaâs proposal for a new federally-funded quarantine facility north of Melbourne, suggesting the state could have to go it alone on its $700 million-plus plan.
Ahead of Fridayâs meeting of national cabinet, Acting Victorian Premier James Merlino said planning and design for a 500-bed facility at Mickleham would begin immediately. The proposed site is federally-owned and Victoria wants the Coalition to pay for construction.

State leaders are trading barbs today over the 13 tourism destinations that are going to be the beneficiaries of discounted airfare tickets.
Queensland would see four destinations included in the subsidised travel package, three destinations in Tasmania and Victoria, South Australia and NSW with just one destination each.
Queensland politicians argued there should be subsidised air travel within the state, a measure not included in the measures.
NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance said Queensland s behaviour did not warrant any form of favouritism while Acting Victorian Premier James Merlino described the stimulus as a “disappointing outcome” for Victoria.
It s a recognition that without truth, without justice you can t have a treaty.
