But in the various measures implemented and more coming out as the authorities running the battle are cracking their heads on what to do next, one glaring factor is missing or hardly taken into account – common sense. While other measures are prohibitively costly and already costing amounts unprecedented in the nation’s history, including the RM500 billion committed so far in aid packages to cushion the impact on the pandemic on people’s livelihoods, common sense is always available for free.

Calls for targeted lockdowns instead of EMCO 15 Jul 2021 / 10:30 H. PETALING JAYA: Targeted lockdowns in hot spots have been recommended over a blanket enhanced movement control order (EMCO) to help the country recover economically while it continues its fight to quell the Covid-19 scourge. Businesses and health experts alike believe this is the best way forward for Malaysia. They pointed out that despite the toll it has taken on businesses, the EMCO has done little to reduce the number of new infections every day. The number of new cases reported daily hit a new high again yesterday, with 11,618 infections reported. The Small and Medium Enterprises Association (Samenta) said the enforcement of the EMCO has only painted a grim outlook for businesses in Malaysia when the objective was to curb the spread of infections.

Managing Covid-19 and nation, urgent need to restrategise

WHILE some results have been seen during the last 15 months, Malaysia needs to urgently restrategise policy measures in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and the many serious crosscutting impacts within society and the economy. By now, it is clear that while frontliners continue to be hard-pressed in managing the rising numbers of Covid patients in public and private hospitals, with shortages of equipment and vital facilities as well as supporting human resources, the decision makers, however, have not been able to present and implement coherent, sensible and effective policy measures. As a result, there continues to be uncertainties, confusion and concern within society at large and the various stakeholders in the economy and the nation as a whole.
