An 11-year-old boy was fatally shot by another child in Middle Smithfield Township, Pennsylvania State Police said.
PSP investigators arrived at the home to find the child dead of a single gunshot wound around 9:35 p.m. Tuesday. The bullet was discharged from a handgun that was handled by a 14-year-old, PSP said. Unfortunately, we are not releasing any additional information besides what is in the release, said PSP Trooper Anthony Petroski. The investigation is still on-going and updates will be distributed as they become available.
Tuesday s shooting is the latest in a string of recent gun-related incidents in the Poconos. At least 16 shootings in Monroe County have led to 10 deaths and numerous injuries since February 2020.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health Wednesday added 2597 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 1,164,216. There were 56 new COVID-related deaths also added Wednesday, leaving the commonwealth s overall total at 26,390. There are currently 2172 people hospitalized with COVID-19. Of that number 480 are in the intensive care unit.
Two local colleges announce different COVID-19 vaccination policies. DeSales University will not require students or staff to get a COVID-19 vaccine for the fall semester. The university says it strongly urges anyone who is eligible to get a vaccine, but it won t be mandatory. In a statement, university president Father James Greenfield says,

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. Newswatch 16 found the coroner and state police at a home on Vista Circle in Middle Smithfield Township near East Stroudsburg around Tuesday night.
State police say another juvenile was holding the handgun when it went off around 9:30 p.m.
Authorities have not released any other information.

State police in Monroe County say troopers were called to the Middle Smithfield Township home just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and found the victim deceased of a single gunshot wound.

Coroner Tom Yanak told local media on Wednesday that he had yet to rule on the cause and manner of the child’s death. The coroner’s office does not release names of juveniles who die, he added.
