The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys basketball team collected it’s 12th victory of the season in convincing fashion Monday, beating West Liberty for the second time in 48 hours 59-25. The Hawks would not trail on the night, opening the game on a 12-0 run, they led 17-4 after one quarter. They would use a 19-4 second quarter run to stretch the lead to 36-10 by halftime. In the second half, the lead would grow to as many as 34 in favor of the Hawks. Mid-Prairie was dominant on both sides of the ball, putting West Liberty through a six minute first half scoring drought, an 11 minute drought from the floor and a 22 minute drought from two point range. Mid-Prairie outrebounded the Comets by 18 and forced 15 turnovers. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams are back at home Friday when they welcome the West Branch Bears to Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman. The Golden Hawk girls are 9-9 on the season and 8-8 in the River Valley Conference after a 43-38 loss to Wilton on Tuesday. In that game, Mid-Prairie was led by Maddie Nonnenmann’s 16 points and Myah Lugar’s 13 points. On the season, Nonnenmann leads the Hawks with 14 points and seven rebounds per game. Amara Jones has the team lead with four assists and three steals per night.
West Branch comes into the contest with a record of 13-1 overall and in the RVC. The Bears are ranked No. 3 in class 2A in the latest poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Last time out, the Bears beat No. 11 West Liberty 46-39 with future Bradley Brave Sasha Koenig putting up 28 points. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Wilton Tuesday for a River Valley Conference doubleheader and returned with a split. The Golden Hawk girls fell in the opener 43-38. Mid-Prairie got off to a tremendous start, opening the game on a 10-0 run, only to see Wilton answer with a 14-3 run, to take a 14-13 lead in the second quarter. The second frame belonged to the defenses, with each team scoring four to leave Mid-Prairie on top 17-15 at half. While the Golden Hawk defense kept them in the game, the offense struggled, going scoreless for more than five minutes and more than 12 minutes with just one field goal in a stretch of the second and third periods as Wilton took a 27-20 lead. Late in the third, Mid-Prairie got on track as Myah Lugar knocked down the first of four consecutive three point goals to get the Hawks within 27-23. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys basketball team hung with No. 3 in class 3A Monticello for a half on Thursday, but the Panthers ultimately pulled away for a 48-29 River Valley Conference win on their home floor. Monticello led 8-7 after the first quarter and 25-21 at half. The Panthers turned up the heat on defense in the second half, giving up just eight total points to the Golden Hawks including a 13-3 run that lasted the entire third quarter to grow their lead to 14. Mid-Prairie shot just 32% from the floor in the loss to go along with 15 turnovers in the tough night offensively. The Hawks outrebounded the Panthers by four. Tate Petersen and Preston Ries led Monticello with 12 points each. Carter Harmsen led Mid-Prairie with 15. With the loss, Mid-Prairie fell to 8-5 on the year. Monticello stayed perfect at 13-0.
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk wrestling team finished the dual regular season Thursday night in Tiffin at Clear Creek Amana High School, splitting a pair of duals. Mid-Prairie opened the night with a win over the Clippers on their home mat 42-33. The Golden Hawks got wins in contested matches from Malachai Sexton at 106, Owen Trimpe at 152, Vinnie Bowlin at 160, Kaden Meader at 170, Cael Garvey at 195, Josh Wallington at 220 and Gannon Callahan at 285, all by fall.
