The Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWOCA) Girls State Wrestling Tournament kicks off today at the XStream Arena in Coralville with two area schools represented. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks will send 10 participants to compete on the sports biggest stage for female athletes. Competing for the Hawks will be freshman Abigail Grout at 106lbs, junior Emil Harmston at 113lbs, at 126 freshman Ellie Brenneman and junior Bronwyn Brenneman, senior Caitlyn Busch and sophomore Marissa Cline at 138, at 145 junior Madison Kelly and sophomores Mia Garvey and Brittney Pfeiffer, and at 152 senior Sarah Meader. Meader and Garvey have been featured this year in the girl’s state individual rankings produced by iawrestle.com at their respective weight classes. Meader comes into the tournament with a 19-3 overall record, Garvey is 10-6. Bronwyn Brenneman is also over the 10 win mark this season at 12-5.
Highland High School was the center of the wrestling world in southeast Iowa Saturday as the Huskies hosted their annual Gary Curtis Invitational. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks posted the best team score of any area squad with 139.5 points, in fifth. South Tama won the tournament with 173 points. Mid-Prairie crowned three champions on the day. Vinnie Bowlin brought home the title at 160lbs with a fall over Kaden Shirk of Wilton. Cael Garvey took the title at 195 with a fall over Johnathan Lilly of Wilton and Josh Wallington was the champion at 220, beating Logan Wright of West Branch by 16-5 major decision in the title bout.
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks hosted the Wilton Beavers for a River Valley Conference basketball doubleheader Tuesday night at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman. The Mid-Prairie boys extended their winning streak to five with a 61-44 victory over the visiting Beavers. The Hawks put up 22 points in the first quarter, led by 15 from Carter Harmsen. Mid-Prairie held a 12 point advantage after the first and were up eight at the break 30-22. They outscored Wilton 31-22 after halftime to cruise to the victory. After the game, head coach Daren Lambert talked about his team’s night. “Harmsen is one of those scorers that, when it starts like that as an opposing coach you know you have your work cut out for you trying to slow him down. Our goal tonight was to put pressure on them. They are a team statistically that tends to turn the ball over and we wanted to get extra possessions and execute offensively.
