In Touch with Southeast Iowa
On this episode of “In Touch with Southeast Iowa,” KCII’s Mark Pitz talks with Teresa Hartley, Transportation Director for the Mid-Prairie School District, about their “Fill the Bus” campaign to provide “Thank You” gifts to area healthcare workers.
The Mid-Prairie School District has been a secret Santa to over 200 healthcare workers this holiday season with their “Fill the Bus” program.
District Transportation Director Teresa Hartley says the campaign took donations of gift cards, flowers, plants, snack items, coffee cups, gift bags, socks and other items to say “thank you” to those on the frontlines in the battle against COVID-19, “This year with the pandemic we knew that healthcare workers were being stretched so thin and having to work, being away from their families all the time. Just giving (them) that little bit of something brings joy to them and that’s what we’re looking for.”

Two students getting home from school are being credited for alerting officials to a house fire in Frytown Wednesday afternoon.
Kalona Fire Chief Jerry Zahradnek says because of the Mid-Prairie School District’s early dismissal Wednesday the students arrived at their home at 1524 Angle Road Southwest shortly before 2:30 p.m. to discover the fire. Zahradnek says they immediately evacuated the home and flagged down a neighbor who called 911.
Zahradnek says the fire was contained to a bedroom and closet on the main floor of the house. He says there was some smoke damage, but little water damage to the home. Firefighters were on the scene for just over two hours and Zahradnek says the cause of the fire hasn’t officially been determined yet, but appears to be electrical in nature. No one was home when the fire started and there were no injuries. Riverside, Wellman and Hills fire departments assisted at the scene along with Kalona First Responders and
