UK revokes Chinese state-owned TV channel CGTN of broadcast licence

play-icon Video report by ITV News Correspondent John Ray The UK has stripped China’s state TV channel of its national broadcasting, after an investigation cited lack of editorial control and links to China’s ruling Communist Party. It comes as the TV regulator Ofcom launched an investigation into China Global Television Network (CGTN) last year. It has now revoked its licence, under laws which state that any licensee must have editorial control of the programmes shown and must not be controlled by political bodies. CGTN is an international, English-language satellite news channel. Ofcom’s investigation concluded that Star China Media Limited (SCML), the licence-holder for the service, did not have editorial responsibility for the news channel’s output.

UK Regulator Revokes Licence Of China s CGTN News Channel

UK Regulator Revokes Licence Of China s CGTN News Channel By Jitendra JOSHI 02/04/21 AT 2:07 PM British regulators on Thursday revoked the licence of Chinese news network CGTN after finding its state-backed ownership structure broke UK law, and warned of punishment ahead for airing an alleged forced confession. The move by Ofcom, which takes immediate effect, means UK broadcast providers must stop offering the channel to British audiences or face an unlimited fine. The regulator said CGTN s licence holder, Star China Media Ltd, had failed to show it had editorial oversight over the network and that a proposed transfer to another media group would still keep it tied to the Chinese Communist Party.
