Vivian Act takes aim at underrecognized virus in babies

Vivian Act takes aim at underrecognized virus in babies Minnesota could pioneer screening for congenital cytomegalovirus.  By Editorial Board Text size Copy shortlink: Seven years ago, the Henrikson family was minutes away from taking newborn Vivian home from the hospital. Then, an astute physician doing a final check on the two-day-old infant called a halt to the discharge. Things just kind of aren t adding up, Leah Henrikson remembers him saying. Leading up to that, Vivian had a constellation of symptoms some jaundice, a rash called petechiae and had failed a hearing screening but nothing that said, Oh my gosh, we have a really sick baby on our hands.

Readers Write: Dean Phillips bipartisanship, health insurance, COVID vaccine, Minnesotans and spicy food If it s easy, it s not enough.  July 10, 2021 6:00pm Text size Copy shortlink: I was initially pleased to see the Star Tribune highlighting Rep. Dean Phillips attempts to bring bipartisanship back to Washington ( Phillips bipartisanship tested by D.C. reality, July 4). We certainly need more of it. And his predecessor, Jim Ramstad, was a master at reaching across the aisle. The article, however, was quick to note the congressman s list of extreme colleagues he refuses to reach out to. A needed boost for Minnesota schools - StarTribune com

A needed boost for Minnesota schools The pandemic left districts struggling, and for the most part the Legislature came through for kids.  By Editorial Board Text size Copy shortlink: COVID-19 has created historically challenging times for Minnesota s E-12 education system. The pandemic forced public schools to turn on a dime from in-school to remote learning. District leaders also suddenly had to provide student meals out of school while maintaining mostly empty buildings. And many experienced declining enrollment as families made other decisions for their children. So the Minnesota Legislature s recently approved education finance package strikes a good balance for helping schools recover from the pandemic while maintaining needed programs and staff.
