Wyoming s Milward Simpson Award Finalists for 2021 Revealed

The 2021 finalists have been announced for the prestigious Milward Simpson Award. This honor is given to the most outstanding male and female student-athletes in the state. It is considered the most prestigious award a prep athlete can earn in their high school career. This year’s honor will be presented at a luncheon on June 19, 2021, in Cody, at the Cody Auditorium Club Room. SVHS and CHS Music groups earn high ratings at District Festival

◆ Directors commend their students for strong work ethic and excellence amidst challenges. Music students from Star Valley and Cokeville High Schools participated in the District Music Festival in Pinedale April 28-30. Choir, band and orchestra musicians from high schools in the western region gathered to perform for judges who scored their prepared pieces and gave them feedback for future reference. Chamber Orchestra, the select orchestra at SVHS, scored 32.5 out of 35, which earned them a Superior rating. Concert Orchestra earned 31.5 points and the 9th Grade Orchestra walked away with 30 points, which qualified them for Excellent ratings. “The adjudicators had lots of positive feedback for our orchestra students,” said Lisa Barber, Orchestra Director at SVHS. “Dr. Griffith from the University of Wyoming worked with each group after their performance. Preserving memories for future generations

Opened in 1939 as the Valleon Ballroom, including roller skating and hotel services, Colter’s Lodge is revitalized to preserve memories for future generations, complete with Valleon Café & Steakhouse, and bar and liquor store. Extensive renovations over a decade have updated the kitchen and hotel suits while preserving the historic original ballroom floor under the restaurant and bar. ◆ Landmark Afton ballroom open as Colter’s Lodge, café and steakhouse; bar sports historic mural. On a timeline for the history of Star Valley, 1939 reads like an annotation. Star Valley High School had the sixth largest school in Wyoming with enrollment at 442. On Greys River on May 12, 48 inches of snow were reported. And the road between Star Valley and Jackson Hole was completed.

SVHS Art students and teacher honored at State Art Symposium

◆ Sanderson, Erickson, Brog, and Dockstader honored. SVHS Art Show is May 6, 5-7 p.m. New records were set by the students in the Star Valley High School Art program and an instructor was honored as Art Teacher of the Year at the 2021 Wyoming High School Art Symposium in Casper. SVHS brought home 74 ribbons from the event that features schools of all sizes throughout the state. Callin Sanderson was honored with a record setting 21 ribbons for his work, while Taylor Erickson had 12 ribbons for 12 entries and McKayla Brog won 13 ribbons with one of her pieces making the trip to Washington D.C. where it will hang in the office of U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney from Wyoming.
