Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Navy Veteran Anthony Cosby. Anthony started a company “Drive Like You Stole It” and the idea is simple, for every item sold, another is donated to organizations serving over 40,000 homeless veterans in this country. Of all the things Anthony sells, socks are the big draw. Anthony says it breaks his heart to see homeless Veterans and he wants to get them on their feet. Take them from homelessness to home to career to productive veteran in their community. Anthony is getting help from Marine Veteran Jeremy Williams. The two say, think of the socks as a conversation starter, a gateway to get the Veterans connected with the services they need. Thank you Anthony and Jeremy for being a light and THANK YOU for your service.

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors 96-year old World War II Veteran Margaret Klessens. After serving her country, Margaret wanted to serve her country again by example. So, on the day that the Covid-19 Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine arrived at the VA Bedford Healthcare System, Margaret became the first VA patient in the country to get the shot. Later that afternoon, the VA gave the shot to it’s first employee. Thank you Margaret for leading the way and THANK YOU for your service.

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Army Veteran Patrick Skluzacek. When Patrick came home from Iraq in the mid-2000’s, his then 13-year old son Tyler knew his Dad had changed. The man that used to be active and happy, was now irritable, lethargic and worst of all, not sleeping. Patrick was having terrible PTSD nightmares and the VA couldn’t help, they just knew that Veterans were having nightmares, some being driven to take their lives. Tyler knew he wanted to help is Dad and other’s so in his senior year in college he developed a smart watch app called “Nightware” that monitors heart rate and recognizes nightmares, emits a vibration and gently pulls the person out of their nightmare. The device has received FDA clearance and is on its way to helping others. Thank you Tyler for helping and THANK YOU Patri

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors World War II Veteran Don Herold. Don was a student at Kansas State when the news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor hit, so he and his friends including former Senator Bob Dole signed up to be pilots. Unfortunately, they were color blind, so instead of flying planes Don ended up jumping out of them. While he scored high on tests and could have become an officer, Don became a paratrooper for the Army and served in the Pacific theater of World War II. Don has story after story of his jumps and the scary situations he jumped into, including jumping at a low altitude of only about 300 feet. Eventually the war ended and Don wrote a book for his wife and daughters. THANK YOU Don for your service.
