Climate change activists have won a big legal victory against oil giant Royal Dutch Shell. A Dutch court ruled Wednesday that the company must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2030, based on 2019 levels.
The case could set a precedent for similar lawsuits against huge oil companies that operate across the globe.
"This is a turning point in history," said an attorney who noted that the ruling "may also have major consequences for other big polluters." By Jessica

THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS – For the first time in history, a judge has held a corporation liable for causing dangerous climate change. Today, as a result of legal action brought by Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie) together with 17,000 co-plaintiffs and six other organizations, the court ruled that Shell must reduce its CO2 emissions by 45 percent within 10 years. This historic verdict has enormous consequences for Shell and the fossil fuel industry globally.
