Story behind Queens Park turtle sculpture explained as plaque unveiled

Joseph Ingleby’s steel sculpture – entitled Turtle Storm – is a familiar attraction near the lake. It was donated to the council – then Thamesdown – by the Dufty family in 1994 before finding its home in the park the following year.  Joseph based the sculpture on the suffering of turtles because of nuclear testing in the Pacific Ocean during the 1980s.  He said: “I wanted it to be made in an abstract way and the way I was expecting it was to be metamorphic, so showing things changing with the shell landscape seen above. “My ideas are the balance between the man-made and the natural environment so there is that imbalance there throughout my work.

Council leader David Renard wants to re-establish relations with The Friends of Swindon Museum and Art Gallery and its chairman Linda Kasmaty BOROUGH leader David Renard wants to “reset the relationship” between his the Conservative council and the Friends of Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. Cabinet member for regeneration culture and heritage Dale Heenan resigned on Wednesday after he became embroiled in a row with the Friends’ group – and Coun Renard said the appointment of a new member to the portfolio gave an opportunity for renewal. The dispute was over the future of Apsley House – the home of the museum and gallery in Bath Road which has been closed since March 2020. Friends chairman Linda Kasmaty was alarmed at a document which recommended Coun Heenan approve the building’s closure for good and disposal.
