Pharr International Bridge plans for major expansion in coming years
The Pharr International Bridge, which provides a direct connection between the US and Mexico and is located in Pharr, Texas, has been seeing major expansion in recent years with more plans for expansion and innovation currently being carried out. The bridge services three major sectors: produce, energy (such as oil and gas), and raw manufacturing, and it is ranked as the number 1 produce bridge in the US, being responsible for crossing 65% of the nation’s produce. Tony Martinez of Primo Trading Services is the Vice Chair of the Board for the bridge and Luis Bazan is the Bridge Director, and they discussed how 2020 has been and what plans will be carried out in the coming year.

Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) continued discussing Friday the various bills passed within the latest COVID-19 relief package.
Cuellar commented on the Omnibus Appropriations and Emergency Coronavirus Relief package. According to the congressman’s office, the bill helped secure language that will create a Latino museum in the nation’s capital, increase economic partnerships between the United States and Mexico, continue the Donations Acceptance Program for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, end surprise medical billing and expand universal charitable giving deduction for the tax year 2021.
A program critical to improving trade and commerce across the Texas-Mexico border has been reauthorized. South Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar says the Donations Acceptance Program has been extended for another year.
The 6-year-old program brings the public and private sectors together to pay for needed infrastructure improvements at the land ports of entry when federal dollars alone aren’t available. Since 2014, the program has helped pay for things like lane expansions, new inspection technologies, and high-tech cameras.
The program is currently being tapped to facilitate the Anzalduas International Bridge for handling northbound cargo trucks – a project local officials say would be an economic development game changer.
