Sinn Féin should decommission its database – Cummins 23rd April 2021 - Senator John Cummins Sinn Féin should decommission its database to reassure Irish voters it takes their data privacy rights seriously, a Fine Gael Senator has said. Senator John Cummins was speaking in the Seanad today (Friday) after the Sinn Féin party leader, Mary Lou McDonald confirmed her party had recently committed two data breaches. Senator Cummins said: “The breaches of Data Protection laws which were reported in the media and confirmed by the Sinn Féin party leader yesterday are extremely alarming and they raise fundamental questions about how secure the democratic system in this country is from outside interference. Some might dismiss this because they want the story to disappear but in the context of the Electoral Reform Bill, it’s critical that we examine these questions and put safeguards in place.

A senior Sinn FÃ©in TD has said a leaked party presentation its use of social media is âstupidly wordedâ, arguing its digital campaigning platform Abu cannot be used in the manner described on the slide. The partyâs housing spokesman, Eoin O Broin, told The Irish Times that a slide in the training material suggesting people can be tagged as a âsocial media engagerâ was not correct. Sinn FÃ©in has come under political pressure to explain how its database works, and whether data from social media platforms is imported to it and further analysed or combined with other identifying information.

Time for Sinn Féin to decommission database on Irish electorate, Seanad told

A call has been made for Sinn FÃ©in to âdecommissionâ its voter database as the only way to end the ongoing controversy about the information the party collects and stores on the Irish electorate. Fine Gael Senator John Cummins also said he hoped the German data protection commissioner would make inquiries about the partyâs AbÃº (which translates from Irish as forever) system which was stored in London but has since been moved to Frankfurt, Germany following Brexit. Mr Cummins hit out at Sinn FÃ©inâs claim the party used the system the same way as every other party and said there is not one single central electoral register but 31 separate registers, one for each local authority.
