WASHINGTON The Biden administration is outlining a plan to sharply increase conservation of public lands and waters over the next decade. A report to be issued Thursday recommends a series of steps to achieve a nationwide goal to conserve 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030.

The Biden administration today unveiled the framework for its ambitious conservation plan, emphasizing the role of voluntary efforts by states, private landowners and tribal nations over an expansion of the federal estate.
The 24-page report also rebrands the proposal often called 30x30 for its goal of setting aside 30% of the nation s lands and waters by 2030 into a 10-year America the Beautiful campaign. The document offers broad strokes about how to reach its aim, leaving for later some key details.

Sequoia National Forest crews have broken ground on a new Porterville headquarters more than 60 years in the making.
First planned in the 1950s, the forest service started construction on the $7.5 million project in February. Rangers expect to welcome guests and staff at the new center in 2022.
The 11,000-square-foot facility will be located on Henrahan Street, the historic site of the Forest Service Work Center, which was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps under President Franklin Roosevelt s New Deal.
In the 1940s, the headquarters was moved to other buildings throughout Porterville that the forest service had leased. Plans to relocate back to the original property in the 1950s never came to fruition, officials said.
