Grafton Ferry ready for new season

The Grafton Ferry, operated by the Calhoun Ferry Company, will resume service at 10 a.m. Friday. Use of the ferry cuts travel time between Missouri and Illinois by about 30 minutes, and people can get out of their vehicles during the river crossings.
GRAFTON The Grafton Ferry will resume operations on Friday for the 2021 season.
This year the ferry is expanding its hours to give people greater access to the Grafton area.
Use of the ferry which can accommodate personal vehicles, buses and vans cuts travel time between Missouri and Illinois by about 30 minutes. People are allowed to get out of their vehicles during the river crossing.

GRAFTON Cruises on the Spirit of Peoria paddlewheel riverboat are set to resume May 27.
The Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau has partnered with the Spirit of Peoria to offer sightseeing, lunch and dinner cruises aboard the replica paddlewheel riverboat on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers July 14 through Oct. 6.
The Spirit of Peoria, built in 1988, is 160 feet long and four stories tall. It has no props or thrusters and is powered by twin Caterpillar 3412 diesel gensets. The boat averages a speed of 7-10 mph and can carry up to 385 passengers.

Untold Black Stories of Alton will be presented by StoryCorps Chicago with a public virtual listening event at Jacoby Arts Center in Alton 5-6 p.m. Friday, March 5, and an optional live-stream event to homes. After the presentation of the stories, a discussion will take place with featured participants followed by the opening of the “RISE” exhibit 6-8 p.m. March 5 showcasing regional artists of color. The Illinois Great River Road includes the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway, a 33-mile stretch of road that runs from Hartford to Pere Marquette State Park. It now has a new designation courtesy of the Federal Highway Administration. It is now classified an All-American Road.
Cory Jobe, President & CEO of the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau tells The Big Z this is a significant designation.

He says this designation will give the bureau another way to market the area. To be designated an All-American Road, the byway must meet criteria for at least two nationally significant intrinsic qualities: scenic, historic, cultural, natural, recreational, and archaeological. It must also be considered a destination until itself.
