CAMBRIDGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) Police say a UPS worker making deliveries in southern Michigan discovered the frozen body of an 80-year-old man outside his home. Foul play is not suspected. Police believe Richard Kokochak died after an accident or health problem in Lenawee County’s Cambridge Township. A UPS employee discovered Kokochak’s body last week in his curved driveway. Kokochak lived in the house with his partner, who was in the hospital at the time. Police say it would have been difficult for a passerby to see the body.
FLINT, Mich. (AP) The Flint City Council in Michigan has signed off on its portion of a $641 million settlement with residents of the poor, majority-Black city who were exposed to lead-tainted water. Flint’s insurer would kick in $20 million as part of a sweeping deal to settle lawsuits against Flint, the state of Michigan and other parties. CHICAGO (WLS) The Great Lakes, while beautiful, are a fragile freshwater ecosystem that needs to be protected. The mission is to save North America s most valuable resource.
Climate change and extreme weather are becoming more frequent. High lake levels and erosion is causing millions of dollars of damage to the prized shoreline. Pollution is causing toxic algal blooms and an abundance of plastic contamination in the water and along the shore. Invasive species are wreaking havoc on the natural ecosystem.
The cities that surround the Great Lakes wouldn t be what they are today without that breathtaking natural resource, and while many factors are at play there is one common goal: saving, protecting and preserving the glorious bodies of water and our cities that we call home.
Here is a look at the legislation’s provisions.
COVID aid to farmers. The bill provides farmers what is essentially a third round of payments under the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. Row crop farmers will receive new payments worth $20 an acre. Eligible crops include those that qualified for CFAP-2 on either the price-trigger or flat-rate basis. Cattle producers will receive supplemental payments under a separate formula. USDA has paid farmers more than $23 billion through the first two CFAP rounds.
There also is a pot of money that USDA can use to make payments to producers who were affected by payment limits in previous CFAP rounds.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) A program that has pumped $2.7 billion into healing long-term injuries to the Great Lakes environment has received authorization from Congress to continue another five years.
The U.S. Senate voted unanimously Sunday to extend the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, as the House did earlier this year. The bill, which requires President Donald Trump’s signature to take effect, calls for gradually boosting the program’s annual funding from $300 million to $475 million by 2026.
The measure doesn’t guarantee the money, which lawmakers will need to provide in annual spending bills. But authorizing the program for multiple years is an important step.
