State House OKs school aid plan to end school district funding gap

View Comments LANSING – All Michigan K-12 school districts would get $8,700 per pupil under a 2022 budget plan approved by the state House Thursday in a 105-3 bipartisan vote. The record $16.7-billion school aid budget represents a major overall K-12 funding boost up $1.2 billion from this year, or 7.8%. House Bill 4411 also marks a historic change to eliminate what has been a long-standing funding gap between various Michigan school districts. Last year, for example, some school districts received as little as $8,111 per pupil, while others received as much as $8,529. Efforts to close the school funding gap which used to be even wider have spanned several administrations and are strongly supported by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat.
