As a keen runner, Anthea Turner has seen first hand the blight caused by litter louts in Britain’s public parks.
Now the former Blue Peter presenter is backing the Great British Spring Clean after becoming ‘obsessed’ with tackling the dumped waste she has seen strewn in Battersea Park, south-west London.
Councils nationwide have reported an ‘epidemic of litter’ as people have escaped their homes during the pandemic to flock to parks. This has led to extra clear-up costs running into tens of thousands of pounds.

Residents are encouraged to be ‘litter heroes’ and take part in litter picks in Stevenage, as part of the Great British Spring Clean.
The Great British Spring Clean – a national campaign organised by Keep Britain Tidy – will take place from May 28 to June 13, and encourages communities to clean litter from streets, parks and beaches to help improve local environments.
Stevenage Borough Council has arranged for litter picks to take place at Shephalbury Park on June 1 and Chells Park on June between 11am and 11.45am and noon to 12.45pm.

The former Countdown presenter is among the stars waging war on rubbish after a trip to Japan for the Rugby World Cup in 2019 left a lasting impression on her.
Miss Vorderman said: I travelled through Tokyo and other cities and I was astonished. Not one single piece of litter did we see. That is cultural.
MIDDLEHAM. – Forest Schools can be held in Lowlands Wood during school holidays, it was agreed at the recent virtual meeting of the town council. The application was made by Kathy Wheeler who confirmed that she was formally qualified as a Forest School teacher and possessed appropriate insurance cover. It was suggested that a meeting be convened with an arboriculturist to draw up a management plan for the wood and to ensure that Forest School activities, including maintenance, were compatible with care of the area. It was noted that some residents had commenced working in the Plantations.
