UPGRADE: Shakerley Lane railway bridge A £3m engineering scheme will see a railway bridge between Atherton and Bolton rebuilt. Work as part of the Great North Rail Project will also see more than a mile of track replaced on the line, which links Hag Fold, Atherton and Walkden, to improve drainage. Engineers say the operation will help to better protect the tracks, between Hindley and Manchester Victoria stations, from flooding in future. For this a number of weekend regional services need to be diverted this month and during March. And Shakerley Lane itself, where the bridge runs over, and which leads to a nearby farm, will also be closed off.

A multi-million pound overhaul has been completed at Bolton train station. More than £2 million has been spent on a major renovation at Bolton station over more than a year, improving the facility for customers, staff and the wider community. New signage and seating have been fitted at the station, with toilets and waiting rooms refurbished and pigeon netting fitted to aid cleanliness. The large rooms on platforms four and five, which date back to the early 1900s, have been restored to their former glory and is set to be used for community and educational projects as well as retail facilities.
Network Rail will undertake improvements to Macclesfield and Atherton stations in the first quarter of next year.
In Macclesfield, a £400,000 investment as part of the Great North Rail Project will make step-free access more reliable to station platforms.
Work will start on Wednesday 20 January and take place until Wednesday 31 March 2021. Both lifts will be improved and will be out of use.
For passengers this means:
No step free access will be available at Macclesfield station between Wednesday 20 January and Wednesday 31 March
Anyone who needs step-free access should book assisted travel with their specific train operator
During the lift upgrade work, tickets will be valid for passengers to travel via the nearest step-free stations
