The City Council Monday night gave its consensus to support a plan using federal stimulus funds to help develop downtown second floor lofts and businesses by paying for sprinkler systems and fire alarms.
Although the Great Bend City Council wanted additional details, it was the consensus of the council Monday night to earmark half of the $2 million in COVID-19 American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 funding the city will receive for subsiding sprinkler and fire alarm systems in downtown upstairs lofts and businesses.

GB experiencing housing shortage Study seeking ways to address problem Great Bend Economic Development Inc. on Monday received the first draft of a housing study. It showed there is a housing shortage.
The initial reports from the Great Bend Economic Development Inc. housing study arrived at noon Monday, GBED President Sara Hayden said. Although more work remains to be done before the final product, it is clear the community has a housing shortage.
“This was their first draft,” she said. After discussions during the Zoom meeting this week, RDG Planning and Design of Omaha, Neb., which is doing the study,“is going to dig a little deeper.”
