Nepal has around 1,800 tankers to supply fuel; 72% of them are involved in theft

Nabin Dhungana March 9, 2021 Comments Kathmandu, March 9 Nepal has around 1,800 fuel tanks in operation. Of them, around 1,300 are involved in theft, according to the government-run fuel distribution monopoly, Nepal Oil Corporation. It is around 72 per cent of the total. The corporation’s Executive Director Surendra Kumar Paudel says the tanker operators were found making false chambers, using pipes in the service tank, and adulterating to steal fuel. Paudel claims the corporation took action against all of them. The corporation’s Thankot depot chief Pradeep Kumar Yadav says a mechanical locking system introduced some years ago, by investing millions of rupees, has completely failed in controlling thefts.

Nepal hopes to export hydrogen fuel to Europe within a decade

Nabin Dhungana February 4, 2021 Comments Kathmandu, February 4 Researchers studying the possibility of producing hydrogen fuel in Nepal say the country has a potential of exporting this fuel to Europe within a decade. The government-run fuel distribution monopoly Nepal Oil Corporation has partnered with the Kathmandu University for the study. As the study has formally begun, the team members say they are hopeful of some good results. Biraj Singh Thapa, an academician of the KU Green Hydrogen Lab, who is leading the study, says if the country can produce hydrogen fuel as expected, it can also save millions of rupees that it spends on fossil fuel every year.

Nabin Dhungana February 1, 2021 Comments Kathmandu, February 1 The government has claimed that the bird flu outbreak has not affected any chicken of Nepal yet, adding some ducks and turkeys raised in an ill environment contracted the infection. The Ministry of Agriculture Spokesperson Shreeram Ghimire says around 2,300 turkeys and ducks found in the infected area of Sanglekhola, Tarakeshwar municipality-7 of Kathmandu have already been destroyed and the area has been disinfected. However, poultry farmers and entrepreneurs say they are worried about the likely impact of the outbreak on their business. Junga Bahadur BC, the president of National Chicken Seller Association, says the Nepali market consumes around 500,000 kilograms of chicken meat every day, around 60 per cent of which is sold within the Kathmandu valley.

Another agitation results in another betrayal for Nepal sugarcane farmers

Nabin Dhungana January 19, 2021 Comments Kathmandu, January 19 Sugarcane farmers from different districts of southern Nepal who were protesting in Kathmandu in December last year demanding outstanding payments from sugarcane mills have said they have been again betrayed by the government. On December 28, they had ended the protests after signing an agreement with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies. In the agreement, the government had ensured the payment from the mills in the next 21 days. The deadline ended on Monday, but all payments have not been cleared yet, informs Rakesh Mishra, a leader of the farmers from Sarlahi. The government, however, is spreading a message that all the payments have been done based on the details submitted by the industrialists, Hari Shyam Raya, another leader of the agitating farmers, complains.
