Opinion: Texas must consider partially joining the national electric grid

Earlier this year, Texans across the state got several warnings for a winter storm that most anticipated to be a fluke. Instead, grueling days of power outages, burst pipes, no running water and thousands of residents struggling to keep their freezing houses warm ensued — some even died in the process. Dire conditions led to the loss of the lives of a myriad of Texans as Winter Storm Uri swept the state. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) ensured Texans that power outages would be resolved quickly. However, as major cities like San Antonio’s downtown stood brightly lit, hundreds of people huddled closely for a minute of warmth.

Phillip, AP The electric power grid manager for most of Texas has issued its first conservation alert of the summer, calling on users to dial back energy consumption to avert an emergency. The Energy Reliability Council of Texas issued the alert shortly after midday Monday, saying many forced generation outages and potential record June demand is squeezing the power supply. Following the February deep freeze that nearly collapsed the Texas power grid, state Republican leaders promised to fix the grid’s problems fast. As it turns out, the fixes were half-fast.

Opinion: Greg Abbott, Texas leaders fall short on fixing power grid

Following the February deep freeze that nearly collapsed the Texas power grid, state Republican leaders promised to fix the grid’s problems fast. As it turns out, the fixes were half-fast.                                            When the freeze hit, Gov. Greg Abbott wrongly singled out frozen wind and solar generators for blame. However, the near-collapse was due mainly to freeze-related failures at natural gas, coal and nuclear plants and associated fuel equipment. It left millions of Texans without power, caused billions of dollars in damages, and more than 100 deaths. It’s no surprise, by the way, that Abbott went easy on natural gas. The oil and gas industry represents his biggest political contributor, according to the Associated Press.
