India has authorised trials of super-fast 5G wireless technology, giving access to international companies with the notable absence of Chinese equipment makers Huawei and ZTE amid lingering tensions.
Telecom service providers Bharti Airtel, Reliance JioInfoComm, Vodafone Idea and MTNL will conduct the trials.
The 5G trials will last an initial period of six months, including two months to procure and set up the equipment, the communications ministry has said.
India has authorised trials of super-fast 5G wireless technology, giving access to international companies with the notable absence of Chinese equipment makers Huawei and ZTE amid lingering tensions between the Asian powerhouses.
The delayed devices include bluetooth speakers, wireless earphones, smartphones, and laptops, two industry sources told the publication.
The Communications Ministry’s Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) Wing has apparently withheld approval for the Wi-Fi modules since last November, with over 80 applications made by US, Chinese, and South Korean firms on hold since then. The government s idea is to push companies to manufacture these products in India, one of the sources said to
Reuters. But tech companies are caught in a difficult situation - making in India would mean big-ticket investments and a long wait for returns, on the other hand, the government-imposed hurdle on imports means a potential loss of revenues.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has permitted telecom service providers (TSPs), including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio Infocomm, Vodafone Idea, and MTNL, to conduct 5G trials.
As largely anticipated, Chinese tech majors such as Huawei and ZTE have not been allowed to participate in the trials.
An official statement said that the TSPs have tied up with original equipment manufacturers and technology providers Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and C-DOT. In addition, Reliance Jio Infocomm will also be conducting trials using its own indigenous technology.
The permissions have been given by the DoT as per the priorities and technology partners identified by TSPs themselves. The experimental spectrum is being given in various bands which include the mid-band (3.2 GHz to 3.67 GHz), millimeter wave band (24.25 GHz to 28.5 GHz) and in sub-Gigahertz band (700 GHz).
