BENGALURU (Reuters) - Indian shares fell over 1% on Wednesday, weighed down by a combination of increasing domestic COVID-19 cases, investors locking in gains and rising U.S. bond yields.

The blue chip NSE Nifty 50 index closed 1.27% lower at 14,721.30, while the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex fell 1.12% to end at 49,801.62. Both indexes have now posted four straight sessions of losses.
India is dealing with a fresh surge in COVID-19 cases, led mainly by the western state of Maharashtra. The country needs to take quick decisive steps soon to stop the resurgence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday.
Oil and Gas stocks were trading in the negative zone, with the S&P BSE Oil&Gas index falling 327.42 points or 2.08% at 15390.26 at 13:48 IST. Among the components of the S&P BSE Oil&Gas index, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (down 4.23%), Petronet LNG Ltd (down 2.58%),GAIL (India) Ltd (down 2.27%),Oil & Natural Gas Corpn Ltd (down 2.22%),Gujarat State Petronet Ltd (down 2.19%), were the top losers. Among the other losers were Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (down 1.64%), Reliance Industries Ltd (down 1.54%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (down 1.24%), Castrol India Ltd (down 0.75%), and Indraprastha Gas Ltd (down 0.35%).
At 13:48 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 141.55 or 0.28% at 50222.41.

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) denied reports that Nita Ambani received an invitation to join Banaras Hindu University (BHU) as visiting faculty by the varsity s Women Study Centre of Social Sciences Faculty. Reports that Nita Ambani will be a visiting lecturer at Banaras Hindu University are fake. She hasn t received an invitation,” it told ANI.
The clarification came after reports suggested that a proposal to appoint RIL Executive Director Neeta Ambani as the visiting professor ran into opposition from BHU students.
