Jennifer Hampton Receives H.O.P.E. Award Posthumously May 17, 2021 by Public Affairs and Marketing Jennifer Hampton Receives H.O.P.E. Award Posthumously Dr. Jennifer Hampton of the Hope College physics faculty, who was killed in an automobile accident in Holland on Sunday, March 14, has received this year’s Hope Outstanding Professor Educator (H.O.P.E.) Award from the graduating Class of 2021. The H.O.P.E. award, first given in 1965, is presented by the graduating class to the professor who they feel epitomizes the best qualities of the Hope College educator.  This year is the first time that the honoree has been chosen posthumously.

Mar 17, 2021 12:08 PM On Sunday, March 14, 2021, Jennifer Ruth Hampton was killed in a car accident in Holland, MI.  Born to Charles and Barbara (Settergren) Hampton on November 22, 1972, in Wooster, Ohio, she was educated in the Wooster Public Schools. She received her B.A. in Physics with honors from Oberlin College, her MPhil in Physics from the University of Cambridge in England on a Churchill Fellowship. She earned her MS and Ph.D. in Physics from Cornell University.  She was a professor and department chair of physics at Hope College, where she was, first of all, a teacher who loved and mentored her students in the joy of learning.

John W. Lanser, 93, of Pella, Iowa passed away Sunday at Unity Point Health in Des Moines, Iowa. Public visitation will be Thursday, March 18, 2021 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Faith Christian Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa. Lois will not be present, but some of the family members will be present part of the time. A Private Family Funeral Service (immediate family only) will be held Friday followed by the interment. Instructions for accessing the live stream of the service will be included in John Lanser’s obituary on Van Dyk Duven Funeral Home’s website by Friday morning. Memorial contributions are preferred for Cary Christian Center or Mississippi Christian Family Services. If you’re unable to come to the visitation, please send any memorial donations to Lois Lanser, 1009 E.6th St., Pella, IA 50219. Van Dyk Duven Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements

Scogin in a message sent to the campus community Monday morning. “As kind and encouraging as she was brilliant, Jenny was a bright light at Hope.”

Hampton, who was 48, was a professor of physics and department chair at Hope, where she had taught since 2007 and was a dedicated mentor of students in collaborative research. “This loss brings deep sorrow for all of us who knew and loved Jenny as a colleague, friend and teacher,” said Hope College President Matthew A. Scogin in a message sent to the campus community Monday morning. “As kind and encouraging as she was brilliant, Jenny was a bright light at Hope.”
